Oh Mr. Sun, Thanks For The Sunshine

I guess eastern North America is having a brutal, never-ending winter, but we here in the west are loving the weather! I mean, it's as good as spring. We've been getting as much fresh air as we can & loving the sun.

Avery had an awesome afternoon with Kate on Tuesday as Kate prepped for her 4th birthday on Wednesday. They had manicures, pedicures, a great time in the park, a ride on the carousel, and ice cream cones before heading back to Kate's house for the rest of the afternoon. I met them at the park for a couple of hours (between optometry shops), and got a good laugh at them trying to play in their sparkle-pink Hello Kitty pedicure sandals. They come in kids sizes, but they are definitely not meant for kids to walk in.The last couple of afternoons Avery has gone to play at nana Noma's. Nana has started digging in her garden already (it is only February) and Avery found her first worm today -- and she loves digging & finding worms! But I'm predicting some problems with nana's garden this year, based on the little friends that are already living in her yard. . . .

Possums!
Nana Noma also has a great neighborhood full of kids, so Avery & her friends Reyna, Noah, Troy, Makayla, Maddie, Katelyn, and others spend hours each day scootering, and biking, and drawing with chalk in the cul-de-sac.
Not like any of us need an excuse to have ice cream, but with weather like this, it's hard to resist. Devon & Avery got messy chocolate cones tonight at "Robbins Basket," and Avery was thrilled to share it with Jordan. She kept rubbing ice cream on Jordan's tongue and saying "look, she's learning how to chew and swallow." I'm not too sure Jordan was so excited about the ice cream, but she's a trooper with food in her mouth these days.
Last week I finished another sweater for Avery -- I love it. In fact, I've decided that I really do just love making kids sweaters -- they are quick & easy.
It's practically summer! I hope it stays this way, but I'm sure it won't. We'll just have to enjoy every minute while we can.

Re-Scheduled!

I guess 3 pathetic calls in 6 days was enough for them to take pity on me -- I'm a planner and a scheduler, and this canceled hip surgery really threw me for a loop. I mean, it has been looming on our horizon for almost months, and we were ready! Anyway, the Shriner's surgery scheduler called at 5:00pm today and said she had Jordan re-scheduled for her hip surgery on 13 March. I'm as excited as can be, considering that it IS major hip surgery, spica cast, etc, etc, on my little girl. However, I just want to get it over with at this point -- before the heat of the summer.

14 days and counting!

Four Eyes

I need glasses, and frankly, I need them soon. My eyes are pooped, from morning to night. So off I went with Avery today to find a suitable pair. She didn't want to go with me, so I told her I needed a helper. Someone to tell me which look good, and which look ugly. Apparently, "ugly" is not a word Avery is allowed to use at school, so she gasped and said we couldn't say that. Okay, then, I told her I needed someone to tell me which glasses didn't look good on me. Again, that was too 'mean', so finally we settled on "mom, I don't prefer those glasses for you." Seriously -- she's only 4, and I'm already at wits end sometimes. And believe me, she did tell me when she didn't prefer a pair I tried on. Unfortunately, Willy Wonka is her idea of high fashion, so what she likes & doesn't like has very little umph!

After a couple of shops we had to call Devon & Jordan to come help us. After trying on every pair of kids glasses herself, she decided Jordan needed to try them all on, too. I'm sure the shop lady was thrilled to have Avery playing with the display frames for hours on end. In the end I didn't decide on anything. There's one more shop I want to go to, but it is closed on Mondays, so I'm heading out there tomorrow morning. Seriously, I have no idea how to choose a pair of glasses I'll have to wear each and every day for 2 years. Too much pressure!

Hmmmm, do these make me look smart?
Hey, is that Harry Potter?

Spring Do

Avery got a haircut the other day. Why is she so well behaved at the shop, but acts like she has ants in her pants when Devon and I just try to trim her bangs? (Sorry for the fuzziness, I only had my phone for taking pictures.)

"Sleep-ersizing"

(from 21 February 2008)

The sun has been our friend lately, so to show our thanks, we're trying to squeeze in every moment in the rays we can. Last week Whitney was thrilled to do Jordan's PT out on the deck, even though sweaters were needed to stay warm enough to be out there.

Jordan didn't really care. She slept through her exercises, but Whitney didn't give up. Frankly, if I got the treatment from Whitney that Jordan does, I'd probably be relaxed enough for a snooze, too. There's no "physical torture" in Jordan's PT regime!
Avery & (nurse) Robin were out to enjoy the sun with us

Herding Cats

(from 21 February 2008)

Yes, this is what it's like once a year in February when the cats need to go to the vet for their annual checkup and shots. I got a bit shredded before, and after, thanks to "help" from Avery (she gets too excited when it's time to round them up & they still do not like an excited 4-year-old). But, once we get to the vet, they're so scared of that place that Avery becomes their best friend & she gets to pet & snuggle them all the time we're there.

The veterinarian was very amused with Avery this year. She wore her cowboy boots, cowboy hat, and brought her stick horse (her own doing, believe me), then she explained to him that she wants to be a "swimming vet doctor" when she grows up. She's been saying this consistently for about 9 months, but only recently has she been able to define it: She will swim to work, doctor the animals all day, then swim home. Sounds good to me, but we don't have any canals around here, so perhaps she's planning to move to Holland or Venice.
I guess the cats think that if they are flat as pancakes they'll eventually become invisible. By some strange freak of physics they do seem to weigh about twice as much as normal when they are squishing themselves into the table there.
Not a bad hiding spot -- for Mojave. Avery didn't fit as well.
Lets get outta here! The only time the kitties want to be in their carrying case.

Here's a link to last year's Rowe Rodeo with Avery, Sierra, & Mojave at the vet.
