Super "Soderday"

Teamwork -- that's what this project takes. It's so nice to be able to get out in the yard and get some projects done -- even before summer gets here.

The project we've been working on for the last few weekends (well, mostly Devon, with Avery in a supervisory & worm hunting role) has been to transform the side of our house into lawn, and eventually an enclosed area for Avery to play in. I think it looks a thousand times better already, and all those summers Devon spent working at a golf course have really paid off!

This is what it looked like when we moved in -- an addition carport (right side of house), that we couldn't get a car into, and wasn't technically legal (built too close to the edge of the property). [Notice also the garage that is no more -- yeah play room & mud room!!! So much more useful!!]
March 2003, right after we moved in. It looked nice then, but OMG, it's a lot of work to maintain (and not much fun to sit on).
January 2007 -- just for fun.
February 2007 -- after limbing that mean, pokey tree. After removing the lower 7 feet of limbs we decided it wasn't so bad and we will keep it. Over the last couple of weeks Devon has been prepping the land -- removing the last of the carport features, the couple inches of gravel, and lots of 'landscape' rocks. Now, I know this looks like playing, but it's really just one of many return trips from moving rocks down to the RV parking area.
In order to get the new stuff in, we had to get the old stuff out. . . .
Nana Noma's poor old Toyota, it takes a lickin' and keeps on truckin'! Easter Sunday -- off to the dump! Devon makes sure Avery wears her hard hat, errrrr, salad bowl.
Cleaned out, and ready to start prepping for sod.
Moving the plant down to a lower terrace -- we'll have to see if it survives.
Avery & I took the workhorse to the local nursery to pick up our 490 square feet of sod. Devon thought it would take 2-3 trips to get it all home, but we did it in one (because the loaders were confident we could make 2 miles loaded up like that, so they kept loading). I'm not sure the truck will ever be the same.
I made Avery wait in the truck because of the equipment, but when she got bored she started yelling at the guys "stop it right now, you're getting the road dirty" -- and she meant it. She was mad, and wasn't afraid to tell them so. But, then I had her introduce herself & ask their names, and the conversation blossomed from there -- as only a 3-year-old's can. Zoikes!! Heavy! Each one of those mats weighs ~40 pounds, so after unloading all of them I just about launched Jordan when I picked her up to carry her inside (she's 25 pounds 3 ounces).
Avery really wanted to help unload, but because they weigh about the same as she does, she just couldn't wrangle them the way she wanted to.
But, she sure could help Devon carry them over to the side of the house. . .
. . . and supervise the installation, too -- sometimes even helping Devon roll out the sod. The first area is almost done
And on to the back. The transplanted plant (in the upper left portion of this picture)

Hmmmm, I thought steam rolling was for pavement. . . .
And what 'supervisor' can resist a dirt pile?!?!?

Wow! looks good! We generally just plant grass seed here and wait for rain to wash it away!
