Happy Hallowe'en!

I'm way behind, but I just HAD to share for the holiday. Avery & I joined Kelly & Kate at Heather & John's house for a halloween get together & trick-or-treating. Heather & John's daughter Kelton (blue monster) is 2 months older than Avery (Kate's Fairy Godmother), and Kate (Kangaroo) is 2 months younger.

Finally, Some Good News All 'Round

Things are still pretty hectic, but at least they're on the upswing. My pumpkins are carved, my new camera rocks, the weather is awesome, Jordan's home from the hospital (since Saturday), and my dad is even a bit stronger & fighting back a bit more these days. And the highlight of the day: Jordan was granted 8-hours of nursing care per day! Of course, I'll believe it when I see it. I talked to the director of the Medically Intensive Program today, and will start tomorrow calling around trying to find Jordan nursing staff*.

As for my dad, he's facing a long road & a big fight, but he seems to be getting his "umph" back a little bit.

I still have a gazillion pics to share, but no time to get them posted. . . . stay tuned!

Doctors & Hospitals & Doctors

Well, here we are again. We had the most awesome day at the Pumpkin Patch on Tuesday, then Tuesday night Jordan retched on me & I knew we were headed to the hospital. I kept in contact with her pediatrician all day on Wednesday, and we finally decided on a direct admit to the floor at 6:00pm on Wednesday evening. She was wayyyyyy dehydrated & snotty: classic Jordan cold. At the hospital we started her on IV fluids, and we are slowly working back up to full strength feeds over a couple of days while the cold passes -- this is run-of-the-mill for us now :-( . She had no fever or infection, which I knew (in a mom-of-Jordan sort of way). The attending on the floor asked me if we should do a chest x-ray and I said "no, she doesn't have an infection, especially not pneumonia, I'd be shocked if her labs show and infection at all." An hour later her labs came back to confirm that. I guess I really am getting to "know" her & her illnesses! She's picking up speed, holding down her half-strength food, and will probably be ready to leave in a day or 2.

On a good "have-to-be-in-the-hospital-anyway" note, I summoned the in-house dietician to go through regular dietician's analysis & comments from a couple of weeks ago. Our regular dietician says that Jordan is super-deficient in a huge number of vitamins and minerals, which seemed a bit strange to me because she eats and unbelievably balanced diet each day: Fresh & frozen meats, fruits, veggies, grains, oils, salt, cultured yogurt, etc. (all blended up together, obviously), and takes a pediatrician-prescribed multi-vitamin. The in-house dietician was also concerned that the analysis was off, so she is going to do some investigating and help me work through it. This is a huge relief to get some help with. I have to wonder, though, if Jordan really is deficient in all these things, what about the rest of us!! We should all have our mouths wired shut & g-tubes placed for optimum nutrition!

As for in-home nursing care, we are still battling, slowly, for services for Jordan. So far she has managed to get a Medicaid coupon & a DDD waiver (our first case manager told us she'd never qualify, HA!). They have approved 28 hours of respite care per month for her (although no personal care, but I think that's because she's too young). And now we are waiting, waiting, waiting to hear back from the Medically Intensive Program, and it's making me crazy! This is the program she needs to get in-home nursing care (8-16 hours per day, if she qualifies). Funny thing -- 2 different people at DDD have now told me she would have 16 hours per day already (actually, long ago) IF WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY PRIVATE INSURANCE!!! ! Apparently, rumor has it, that they are denying coverage for anyone with private insurance, because insurance can just pay for those people to be in the hospital all the time, and if insurance doesn't want that, they can "volunteer" to give more in-home nursing hours. Mind you, this isn't POLICY, this is just what the people in charge are doing to save their budgets, and this is just a rumor. I still haven't been able to talk to the director of this program directly, but for now they aren't processing Jordan's application until they are convinced that the insurance company won't pony-up extra in-home nursing care hours. I guess that's one way to never decide on her case. They can argue that all they want, but if they don't decide soon one way or the other I'm calling my congressman again -- and I will appeal if they deny her benefits. Everyone knows that the Medically Intensive Program is secondary to private insurance, not instead of private insurance.

And, to top it off, our nursing agency has no nurses to staff us. We still have three 8-hour visits available through our insurance (in 2007), but there are no nurses to work those shifts. Uggghhhhhh!! !

Now the rest of us: Devon is in Edmonton working until Sunday night, so his parents came down to help out. Of course, by Thursday morning Avery was sick, too. She coughed until she puked on Thursday morning (starting at 4:30am), and had to miss pre-school & swimming because of it. She's doing better today -- typical cold for Avery. Just what Earl & Linda were hoping for; sick grandkids everywhere. But thank goodness grandpa Earl, grandma Linda, and nana Noma were all around to helpt out -- they've been a huge lifesaver to me during this crazy time.

Then I came down with the cold on Thursday evening. It's not a terrible one, but my nose & ears are plugged up, which was painful on the flight to Spokane & back on Thursday. I flew over to take my dad to a doctor appointment with a new doctor. I don't really know how to help him get better, so I'm calling on my recently fine-tuned "talents" of making & going to doctor appointments. We're just trying to get him "stabilized" a bit, so that he can get a little stronger and feel a little better, and hit this cancer thing running. The mini-strokes and the heart attack he had in September have set him back a bit, and the doctors and hospitals have aggravated his life-long claustrophibia, causing anxiety & panic attacks.

Anyway, at the doctor's office we tried to switch around some of his medications to see if we could make him less "confused," but it backfired, and he had a horrible night. Kay & Jon Paul with up with him for most of it. Fortunately today he was doing much better, and after I talked to the doctor he said to go back to the old medications because at least then he wasn't panicking & anxious in his own home. So much for that.

So the next order of business is to get his medications analyzed by the pharmacy to make sure there aren't any bad interactions. Then he needs to identify one doctor to be the "team leader," and make sure the others are all working together for a common goal. Hopefully his GP can fill this roll adequately, and the new doctor is going to contact the others and get them working together, too. And if they don't we will find new doctors that will work together. I can always find more doctors and schedule more appointments.

I don't know much about illnesses, I guess, but boy do I know about doctors, appointments, & doctor team work! Fortunately & unfortunately.

Out With The Old, In With The New

Saturday night Avery dropped our almost 5-year-old Nikon CoolPix 4500. That thing has been a workhorse for us, or maybe a work"cat," because that was definitely it's 9th life used up. The bizarre buzzing noise emitting from the camera was proof -- cameras aren't supposed to alarm like that. It was screaming for mercy! So tonight it was time to take the plunge to the next level: A Nikon D40 SLR. It's a "beginner" model as far as SLRs go, but I'm just so excited.
As soon as the battery was charged I was snapping pics here and there. I got two lenses, and now can shoot 18 to 55 mm, or 55 to 200 mm. I LOVE it. Also, I got the full 3-year, full replacement ultra-super-duper warranty, in case any more kids fingers go touching things. . . although I did make a point of making sure Avery counted all of her fingers, and told her if she wants to keep them, she needs to keep them OFF mommy's new "toy."

Devon really wanted to make an impression as I snapped the first photo with it.
And the second, tooFinally that got boring and he went back to work

What To Do, What To Say

It's strange, usually finding words is not a problem for me -- now, whether they are the right words, or whether I'm putting my foot in my mouth is a different story.

But despite my silence here on the blog, my head has been spinning, and not in a good way I suppose. I'm very worried about my dad and his failing health, and have found myself a little overwhelmed with the whole situation. So, being 8 hours away, one way to deal with it is to ignore it. But, I can't really seem to do that either. And I can't seem to figure out how to spend the extra time I want to be spending there, while at the same time taking care of Jordan & Avery here. So, I just keep going around in circles in my head until it's too exhausted to think or speak. Whaddya do?

Despite all this worry, we haven't been idle around here. I have tons of photos to share -- soon I hope! More great pictures from last weekend with my dad. Decorating pumpkins. Making Halloween cookies. Washing my cats (that should have been videotaped to preserve the bizarre meowing noises they were making). And trying to restore my computer back to working order*. Devon started painting downstairs so that the ceiling and walls can be done before we install the new tile in the hallway. And I had to clean out all of the too small clothes from the girls drawers, and go shopping for bigger shirts for Jordan. Never a dull moment, eh?!

And the big downer of the weekend IN our house: our glorious, workhorse Nikon finally used up it's 9th life when Avery dropped it on the floor last night. Now I have to get a new camera sorted out before we hit the pumpkin patch for our annual trip on Tuesday. Grrrrrrrrrr.

So, perhaps if I get to bed in the next few minutes I'll be able to get up and post some fun, cool pictures tomorrow at some point. Pictures, afterall, are worth a thousand words, and are certainly more entertaining than my drivel. I guess I better clean up the diaper bag mess in the middle of the floor first, though. Does the fun ever end?

*Note: HP Support has NEVER fixed a single thing I have asked for help with -- even with their own software programs. Grrrrrr. The other day I tried to get help so I could watch Grey's Anatomy on line, and after step 1 of 3 from HP Support, Devon had to completely re-install my system! Step 1 completely killed the thing!! Grrrrrr. But now he's got it up and running to close to 100% again -- nothing like wasting all your "free" time for 2 weeks on something like that.

My Daddy Signed Me Up For Bull Ridin'

Well, we're not exactly sure where this idea came from, but Avery keeps telling people that (randomly). And let me tell ya, she loves wearing her cowgirl boots! So when we saw the new bull ride at Walmart last week she just had to do it, even though it was pretty lame & anti-climactic. Believe me, she was never in any danger -- even though I let her go bull ridin' I'm won't be losing my parenting license over this.

Snip 'N' Snore

Jordan got her first real haircut last week after her occupational therapy session (I trimmed her bangs in early May) . Apparently she was pooped from all the touching and rubbing on her face (at OT), because she slept hard through the whole haircut. The stylist wished out loud that all kids were as accommodating as Jordan was.

Unbelievable Generosity

We returned home tonight from a weekend in Usk, Washington. On Friday my dad celebrated his 60th birthday, and on Saturday over 150 of our closest family & friends joined us to help him celebrate as well. It was truly overwhelming. He really over did it by staying for so long, insisting on talking to and thanking everyone there. We tried to drag him away earlier to save his energy, but he refused. By the time we got home last night he was absolutely speechless, which was good, because he really needed to rest.

We were also able to raise over $5000 to help offset his mounting medical bills. Believe me, as a family we were completely blown away by this outpouring of generosity from businesses and individuals, both near and far.

We'll never be able to thank you all enough for your love, friendship, and support during this battle. But we'll try: Thank You!

BFF

We've been busy but luckily Best Friends Forever Avery & Kate have been able to have some fun.

Kate started pre-school a couple of weeks ago at Avery's pre-school, and they both love it.

And here they are as the Best Fairies Forever. Actually, they were arguing over who was the "princess" & "fairy god mother" today, but they still have such short attention spans they can't argue for too long (thankfully).

Celebrations And Lots & Lots Of Food!

Lots and lots of birthdays going around -- and a few holidays, too. Grandma Linda had a birthday on Friday (5 October), grandma -grandma Mavis turned 90 on Saturday (6 October), and Canadian Thanksgiving is on Monday (8 October), so a weekend at grandma Linda & grandpa Earl's house was in order.
Birthday dinner: Avery giving grandpa Earl a kiss, Doreen, grandma-grandma Mavis, Bruce, grandma Linda, and Devon
The birthday girls: grandma-grandma Mavis (lavender sweater) & grandma Linda (black sweater) Happy 90th birthday!
Jordan's nummy food, too. . . . (look at that stratigraphy)
Lots of hugs & snuggles, inside & out (mostly inside though, since it's been raining like crazy most of the day)
Hmmmmmm, who's this kid? I was outside taking some pictures of grandpa Earl's car for him, and Avery ran out saying "wait, wait, what about me, how about if I stand here, or here!" She really wanted to be in the pictures, for the first time EVER!!! She even stood out in the rain to get in on the action.

Sometimes Life Just Gets In The Way

I'm still here, I hope you haven't lost interest. We've been incredibly busy.

Avery & I made a quick trip to eastern Washington this week -- well, I'm not sure if there's anything "quick" about 7+ hours in the car with a normally active 3.5 year old, but we were only gone on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. We had planning to do for the big birthday bash next weekend, and some things just need to be sorted out in person. And it was a good excuse to get to see my dad, and help out around the house a little bit (not nearly enough, though). He is very tired and weak, and a little ghostly looking (skinny & pale), but everyone kept commenting on how much better he's been doing over the last 1o days, so that's a good sign, I guess. He even made it out on Tuesday to watch my (freshman) sister Jessica's volleyball game, and on Thursday morning to join the birthday breakfast celebration for a dear family friend, Kathy.
Grandma Kay, Avery, & grandpa Gary waiting for breakfast to comeAvery & grandpa Gary

Avery couldn't be happier on the farm. She sat with grandpa Gary for ages -- where ever he sat down, she was on his lap. Uncle Jon Paul & aunt Jessie are pretty popular, too! She was devastated to learn that they didn't stay home from school just to play with her. Avery even got to help with the chores on Wednesday & Thursday nights. Rounding up cows on the 4-wheeler & milking Pixie with Jon Paul were the highlights. She also loves playing with grandpa-grandpa John & Dona, and sleeping in the 5th wheel is always a big hit. I was only able to convince her to leave by promising a trip back next week . . . .
Avery snapped this picture of grandpa-grandpa John at Kathy's birthday breakfast on Thursday morning

And even though it's 7+ hours in the car, Avery's already learning the route. She knows that in the Tri-Cities (about half way) there's a "Dilly Queen" and 2 "Robin's Baskets" -- (Dairy Queen & Baskin Robbins). Hmmmmm, I'm not sure that navigating by ice cream store is an approved method, but hey, whatever keeps the kid from going bananas in the back seat works for me.

"What's this thing, can I watch it pleeaaassseee???" Avery found this cassette tape (and a few others) in the toybox that grandma Kay has. She really really really wanted to watch it! I kept telling her you could only hear it, and finally we realized that Jon Paul has a tape deck on his stereo in his room. It only took us a few minutes to figure out how to make it work so she could hear the tape once and for all. I guess cassettes are now the equivalent of 8-tracks in the 80s and 90s. (And, by the way, how cute are those kickers on her feet! Now that's a cowgirl at heart.)

In addition to our travels, we also spent quite a bit of time at the beginning of the week on Marble Works. Avery's getting pretty good at putting them together just right to make the track work, and I'm getting better about letting her touch them. Of course, sometimes I just can't resist & have to take over, but I know, I know, it's supposed to be a learning game for her, not a test of my skills to use every piece in the rough-tote to build the biggest marble track ever. . . . We still have a ton of things to do over the next couple of weeks, so bear with me -- I'll be back eventually. . . .
